The United Nations Security Council has condemned the second round of Zimbabwe's presidential election, saying the conditions for a free and fair vote did not exist in the country.
South Africa blocked the wording of an earlier draft, which would have declared the election illegitimate. The statement also expressed deep regret that Zimbabwe went ahead with the flawed polls. Earlier, foreign ministers from the Group of Eight leading industrialised nations meeting in Japan issued a joint statement saying they couldn't accept the legitimacy of a vote, which didn't reflect the will of the Zimbabwean people. State-run newspaper calls for transitional Zimbabwe government ... opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai pulled out, due to what he said was a government campaign of violence against supporters of his Movement for Democratic Change. Tsvangirai won the first round of the election on March 29, but didn't get the more than 50 per cent of the vote needed to avoid a run-off.
