In Niger, at least 17 people have been killed in fighting between government troops and ethnic Tuareg rebels.
Both sides have confirmed that the clashes took place near the town of Tezirzait on Friday, but they have given different death tolls. The government said in a statement that 17 rebels were killed. The rebel group, the Niger Movement for Justice, said on its Web site that 26 government troops and seven of its own fighters died.
