Zimbabwean government sources say President Robert Mugabe is expected to be sworn in for a new term on Sunday.
Mugabe is reportedly heading for a landslide victory in a one-candidate election which was boycotted by the opposition and condemned by world leaders as illegitimate. Official tallies from two thirds of polling stations showed Mugabe defeating opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai by a large margin. Tsvangirai was left on ballot papers after electoral authorities refused to accept his withdrawal last week. Tsvangirai pulled out of the run-off because of increasing violence against his supporters. Tsvangirai to contest Zimbabwe presidential run-off ... that the incumbent Mugabe was the only presidential candidate in the race. Steinmeier welcomed the decision by the UN Security Council to discuss Zimbabwe in the weeks ahead and said the European Union would consider what additional steps it could take.
