US President George W Bush has declared a state of emergency in California and has ordered federal aid to help battle more than 1,000 wildfires burning out of control.
A spokesperson from the Californian State office said roughly 265,000 acres of forest and parkland have burnt across the western state since the fires erupted on June 20. State governor Arnold Schwarzenegger had urged Bush to offer federal aid, saying California could not provide an effective response to such severe fires.
