French diplomat Alain le Roy has been named as the new head of the United Nations peacekeeping department (DPKO). He will replace French Jean-Marie Guehenno as head of one of the most high profile jobs in the world body.
The DPKO runs about 20 missions around the world and employs around 100,000 staff. The peacekeeping department celebrated its 60th anniversary in May with "blue helmets" still in high demand but recently tarnished by sex abuse and corruption scandals. The UN does not have its own military force and depends on contributions to UN peacekeeping from member states.
