France's army chief has resigned following a military display which went wrong, injuring 17 people.
President Nicolas Sarkozy's office said it accepted the resignation of General Bruno Cuche. Sarkozy promised severe punishment after a soldier mistakenly fired live rounds instead of blanks at a weekend military exercise in hostage rescue. A number of children were among the injured.
