A spokesman for Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe has welcomed an African Union resolution calling for a unity government.

Meanwhile South African President Thabo Mbeki, the chief mediator between Mugabe's ZANU-PF party and the opposition, has warned against trying to impose a solution from the outside. He made the statement after French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said the European Union would only accept a Zimbabwean government led by Tsvangirai.
