02.07.2008 - Czech health unions plan further protests against reforms

She said one of the reasons of the protests is the proposal to change emergency services. The last strike against health care as well as other reforms was held on June 24.

The first part of health care reforms took effect on January 1 since when patients pay 30 crowns per visit to a doctor, 30 crowns per item on a prescription, 60 crowns per stay in hospital, and 90 crowns for after-hours treatment. But reacting to the sharp criticism of the planned reforms, Julinek decided two weeks ago to split the package and to delay the controversial bills on the transformation of teaching hospitals into joint-stock companies, and others. He said he wants to further discuss them. Julinek now plans to submit to the Chamber of Deputies only three bills on health services, specific health services and the health emergency service which he hopes will be supported. But trade unions also criticise these bills. Zitnikova said the proposed changes of the rescue service can deteriorate the patients' situation. Jiri Schlanger, chairman of the medical trade unions, called on Julinek a week ago to discuss the whole reform. The medical trade unions were among the more radical during the June strike.
