The music industry says thousands of UK broadband users who share tracks illegally will be getting letters warning them of the consequences.

Trade body the BPI says so far it has already identified and contacted about 800 Virgin Media customers who have been sharing copyrighted material.

The BPI is warning that it may sue other internet providers who refuse to co-operate with its demands.

The BPI wants internet providers to agree to cut off people who repeatedly ignore the warnings.

It maintains that providers need to "educate" their customers and suggested the government could bring in legislation to make companies cooperate.

Virgin is sending each of those individuals identified by the BPI a letter, informing them that what they are doing is illegal.

But BBC technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones said the music industry has struggled to convince other internet providers that they should join the battle against the illegal sharing of music.

Carphone Warehouse is one firm which has refused to co-operate.
