Rebels in Georgia's breakaway region of South Ossetia have ordered the mobilisation of its reservists after at least two people were killed in shelling overnight.
Separatist officials said that Georgian troops launched a large-scale attack on South Ossetia's main city of Tskhinvali. Both sides blamed the other for the hostilities. South Ossetia, which broke away from central rule in the 1990's, has accused Tbilisi of preparing to retake the region.
