Jesse Helms, an iconic US conservative lawmaker known for hard-line stances on foreign policy and civil liberties, has died at the age of 86.
A blunt-talking product of the Old South, the lawmaker from North Carolina was known as "Senator No" for opposing just about anything that obstructed his conservative view of the world. The one-time radio commentator turned senator, pursued an ideological agenda that was anti-communist, anti-liberal and anti-gay. He also held a deep distrust of international organisations and many foreign governments.
