The European Union has called for a new election as soon as possible in Zimbabwe and refuses to recognise President Robert Mugabe's victory in the controversial June 27 presidential poll. Meanwhile, Mugabe continues to defy world opinion by insisting that he won the election fairly.
Speaking to thousands of supporters after flying home from an African Union summit held in Egypt, the 84-year-old leader ruled out the prospect of talks with his opponents to end Zimbabwe's political crisis, unless they acknowledge his victory in the heavily criticised one-man presidential election. Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change claims that pro-Mugabe militias have killed over 100 of its followers and detained some 1,500 supporters since March.
