A key regional party in India has said it will back the government over a controversial nuclear energy agreement with the United States, easing concerns the pact could trigger early elections. Support from the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh would give the government a secure parliamentary majority for the deal.
Communist parties claim the accord would make India a pawn of Washington. Supporters say the pact will give India access to US nuclear technology and provide the country with more energy alternatives for economic development. Analysts say the agreement would also shift trade and diplomatic ties toward the West.
