Spaniard Alejandro Valverde has won the first leg of this year's Tour de France.
He now gets to wear the race leader's yellow jersey after pulling away from the pack at the end of a 197.5-kilometer ride from Brest to Plumelec. Vlaverde is among the favourites to win the 2008 tour, which is suffering from a poor image of rampant drug cheating. The 2007 winner, Alberto Contador of Spain, is not present because his Astana team was barred due to doping charges.
