German citizen held by US forces as terror suspect ... German Chancellor Angela Merkel has warned on the eve of the G-8 summit in Japan that rising food prices could lead to international insecurity.
In a German pre-summit statement, Merkel said food shortages and conflicts over food distribution could put democratisation of countries at risk and destabilise states. She also said ahead of the summit that the eight major industrial nations had to underscore their intent to keep their commitments made at last year's summit in Germany to cut greenhouse gas emissions by half by the year 2050. Meanwhile, thousands of protesters have gathered near the conference site in Toyako, rallying for more to be done against soaring food prices and climate change.
