Due to exploding food prices, the ministers, at a weekend meeting in Paris, said the EU's ambitious plan to have all fuel powering vehicles contain 10 percent biofuel by the year 2020 was not set in stone. Instead, the ministers said greater efforts should be undertaken to develop hydrogen and electric-powered cars. By distancing themselves from biofuels, ministers hope to diffuse growing criticism that the EU's target is contributing to deforestation and forcing up food prices. A World Bank report has blamed biofuels for a 75 percent rise in the price of staple foods.
