The move came just days after a Colombian military operation freed French-Colombian politician Ingrid Betancourt in a flawless rescue mission that passed off without a single shot being fired. She had spent over six years in captivity where she suffered sickness and torture. The Marxist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia or FARC have waged a four-decade battle against the Colombian government. They are believed to be still holding hundreds of hostages, mainly Colombians, in their jungle hideouts.
