At their summit in Japan the leaders of rich G8 nations have said they "share the vision" of at least halving climate-damaging gas emissions by 2050 by switching from fossil fuels to low-carbon technologies.
They gave no numerical targets. In their communique, the G8 leaders say UN-led talks to tackle climate change provide a scientific framework for a global agreement to replace the Kyoto Protocoll which expires in 2012. The G8 says it's committed to a successful conclusion of those talks in Copenhagen next year. The G8 leaders also say the world economy faces uncertainty, adding that they are deeply concerned about rising oil and food prices. The outlook, however, remains "positive", they added. They called for further efforts to improve energy efficiency and diversify sources of energy. The G8 comprises the United States, Japan, Germany, Britain, France, Italy, Canada and Russia.
