The leaders of rich G8 nations, meeting in Japan, have said they aim to halve climate changing gas-emissions by the middle of the century.
In a communiqué, the leaders said they needed to set goals to achieve the "shared vision", but gave no numerical targets. The communiqué was welcomed by the European Union but heavily criticised by environmental groups. The Word Wide Fund for Nature, the WWF, called the document "pathetic" and said rich nations were ducking their responsibility.
