The Church of England is part of the worldwide Anglican Communion comprising 77 million followers. It first ordained women priests amid controversy in 1994. The England church's threatened schism precedes the Lambeth Conference, the wider Anglican community's once-in-a-decade gathering which starts in southern England next week. The Vatican says it regrets the synod's decision to allow women bishops, saying it presents a new obstacle to reconciliation between the Roman Catholic church and the Anglican community.
