11.07.2008 - ISAF call for radar planes political dilemma for Germany

NATO's International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan has asked headquarters for more surveillance planes to support its operations against the Taliban.

The Czech Republic news are represented by www.prague-hotel-hotels.com

The request by ISAF, if approved, could pose political problems for Germany. NATO owns a fleet of 17 radar aircraft based near the western German city of Aachen. 40 percent of the planes are manned by German pilots and their deployment is likely to need  parliamentary approval. Germany has 3,500 troops in Afghanistan, the maximum allowed by a parliamentary mandate, which expires in October. Berlin wants to raise that threshold by an extra 1000 troops.
