The US has promised 300 million euros while the German government, the second largest source of foreign aid to Kosovo, is to provide 100 million euros. Meanwhile Kosovo's Prime Minister Hashim Thaci has confirmed that the Balkan state has applied for membership of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Only sovereign states can join the World Bank. Kosovo seceded from Serbia in February. Forty-three mainly Western nations recognise an independent Kosovo. Serbia, backed by Russia, does not.
