Indonesia arrests E Timor rebels ... watchdog has called for more international cooperation to tackle ongoing violent piracy attacks on ships in waters off the coast of Somalia and Nigeria.
The London-based International Maritime Bureau said there 114 cases of piracy world wide in the first half of this year including 42 off the coast of Somalia and Nigeria alone. This week, Somali pirates released a German ship they hijacked a month ago in the Gulf of Aden after its owners paid a $750,000 ransom. The maritime watchdog said increased security efforts had led to a significant drop in piracy in Indonesian waters, once a hotspot for attacks.
