The European Union's executive has pledged half a billion euros in aid to rebuild Kosovo's struggling economy.
The promise was made at the start of an international donors conference in Brussels that hopes to raise 1.5 billion euros. The US has pledged 300 million euros while the German government, the second largest source of foreign aid to Kosovo, is to provide 100 million euros. However, there has been concern about the degree of corruption in Kosovo. EU enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn addressed fears that the donations could be squandered. Forty-three mainly western nations recognise it as an independent state. Serbia, backed by Russia, does not.
