12.07.2008 - Lebanon hopes for good ties with Syria, wants embassy

Lebanon's President Michel Suleiman has said that his country would like to open an embassy in neighbouring Syria.

Suleiman said that would strengthen relations between the two Arab neighbours. He was speaking ahead of a four-way meeting with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Qatar's Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani. Syria has long been a dominant player in Lebanon's political and military affairs. However, the two sides have never had ambassadors in each other's country since Lebanon's independence since 1943 and they cut off diplomatic relations in 2005, when former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri was killed. Syria's critics accuse Damascus of having a role in the killing, a charge Syria denies.
