Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says he wants France and the US to contribute to peace efforts Merkel Vows to Back French EU Presidency ...
Global Media Forum continues ... between his country and Israel.
That's according to a joint statement issued after talks with his French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy in Paris. The statement also said that Assad was determined to establish diplomatic ties with neighbouring Lebanon. Syria has long been a dominant player in Lebanon's political and military affairs. However, the two sides have never had ambassadors in each other's country since Lebanon's independence in 1943, and Syria was accused of having a role in the 2005 killing of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. Damascus denies the charge. The Paris meeting came on the eve of a Mediterranean summit that brings together over 40 countries and marks a diplomatic comeback for Assad after years of isolation.
