Lebanon and Syria have reportedly agreed to open embassies in each other's capitals for the first time since their independence from colonial rule in the 1940's.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy announced the landmark decision following talks with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Lebanese President Michel Suleiman in Paris. Lebanon and Syria broke off all diplomatic ties after former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri was assassinated in 2005. Beirut accused Syria of involvement. Damascus refutes the charge.
