French President Nicolas Sarkozy has opened the first summit of the Mediterranean Union.
Over 40 leaders from Europe, the Middle East and northern Africa are in Paris for the introduction of the new body which is to represent some 750 million people. France and Egypt are to co-chair the new body for two years, but details such as the location and powers remain to be resolved.
