After the launch of the Mediterranean Union, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said on French television that no peace was possible in the Mideast without Syria's involvement.

Assad added that Middle East peace was unavoidable but that it was unlikely until a new administration took office in Washington. He said President George W. Bush had not vision for peace.
