The prosecutor for the International Criminal Court in The Hague has sought the arrest of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir for alleged genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity in the strife-torn Darfur region.
Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo said that Bashir had "masterminded and implemented" a plan to destroy a large portion of three ethnic groups in Sudan. His appeal to the court's judges marked the first time the arrest of a sitting head of a state had been requested at the ICC. However Ocampo said it was now upto the panel of judges to decide on his formal request. The move came despite warnings that it could jeopardise peace efforts in Darfur and lead to the expulsion of aid workers and peacekeepers.
