14.07.2008 - Technical reasons are behind Russian oil shortfall - Sarishvili

The Russian side referred to oil extracting problems and unspecified changes in Russian supplier firms, said Bartovsky. "I do want to believe that the reasons (for the drop in supplies) are technical or technical and organisational," Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek told journalists today. He said he hopes the problem will be resolved soon.

and further crude oil can be transported from elsewhere. He said he would welcome if the Czech Republic were not dependent on supplies from only one country in the future. Crude oil supplies from Russia had been falling last week, and on Friday the Russian side said the cut in supplies in July would even be greater. The Industry and Foreign Ministries were trying to find a solution to the situation. There had been speculations about the shortfall being a reaction by the Russian side to the signing of the Czech-US treaty on the US radar base in the Czech Republic. The Industry Ministry assigned the shortfall to technical problems that are not unusual in its first reaction. "Oil supplies had been reduced in summer also in the previous years," said Bartovsky. Around 7.7 million tonnes of crude oil are imported to the Czech Republic a year, of which 5.5 million tonnes via the Druzhba pipeline from Russia and 2.2 million tonnes via the IKL pipeline from Trieste, Italy. Building a new oil pipeline is not considered because IKL has capacity to ensure sufficient supplies for the Czech Republic if need be. The current capacity is 10 million tonnes of crude oil a year, a third more than the country's annual consumption. The Czech Republic has 95 days of oil and oil products. Under European legislation, the country's minimum reserves have to last at least 90 days.
