German President Köhler visits Croatia ... from the country's 15 intervention centres in support of home violence victims. A total of 338 men and 7 women were evicted from their homes for violence.
This is 140 cases (29 percent) fewer than for the same period of last year. The law protecting victims of home violence has been valid in the Czech Republic since January 2007. The police are authorised to evict for ten days those who harm their relatives. A total of 1,330 men and 15 women have been evicted since the law took effect one and a half year ago, which saved 2,458 from further violence. In the first half of 2008, 44 percent of all cases of violence occurred between husbands and their wives. Last year these cases made up 54 percent of them. On the other hand, violent incidents within unmarried couples made up 27 percent of all cases in January-June 2008, compared to 22 percent in 2007. The number of cases of violence involving different generations increased as well this year, to 19 percent from last year's 16. Among the victims in the first half of this year, 11 were aged over 71 and six over 81. The number of incidents within divorced former couples doubled this year against last year. About 25 people were evicted in each of the Czech Republic's 14 regions averagely in the first half of this year, 10 fewer than last year. Under the law, the police can evict violent people from their homes for ten days even without the endangered persons' consent and they have to check the order's enforcement repeatedly. The court can extend the 10-day period. They can also ban the perpetrators from approaching the victims, but only on the latter's request.
