A German court has convicted three Iraqi men of belonging to a terrorist organisation and plotting to kill former Iraqi Prime Minister Ayad Allawi.
The state court in Stuttgart sentenced the main suspect to 10 years in prison. An accomplice received a sentence of seven and half years, while the man believed to have been responsible for planning the operation was sentenced to eight years behind bars. Prosecutors had called for sentences of up to 11 years. All three men denied the accusations and their defence lawyers called for them to be acquitted. The charges stemmed from an alleged plot to kill the then Iraqi prime minister during a visit to Germany in 2004.
