Malaysian police have arrested opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim over allegations that he sodomised a male aide.
Anwar was taken to hospital, possibly for DNA tests, after spending more than six hours at Kuala Lumpur police headquarters giving a statement over the allegations levelled at him by Mohamad Saiful Bukhari Azlan, a 23-year-old former aide. Anwar denies the allegations claiming that they are politically motivated. Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar said that Anwar is likely to spend the night in detention. In 1998 Anwar was sacked as deputy prime minister and jailed on sodomy and corruption charges but these charges were quashed by the country's top court in 2004 and he was released.
