German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier is travelling to Georgia in a bid to help end the conflict over the separatist Georgian region of Abkhazia.

Steinmeier will then travel to Moscow for talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov before returning to Berlin on Saturday. Abkhazia and South Ossetia have enjoyed de facto independence from Tbilisi since the early 1990s, but their self-declared governments are not formally recognised by any other state. Georgia accuses Russia of tacit support for the rebels and stoking tensions in both regions.
