Macedonia's opposition party, the Social Democratic Union, has walked out of parliament in protest at the arrest of its deputy leader. Zoran Zaev, the mayor of the south-eastern town of Strumica, has been arrested along with four other people in connection with a corruption investigation.
Announcing its boycott of the parliament, the Social Democrats countered that the incoming government of prime minister designate Nikola Gruevski was behind the legal action. Gruevski's conservative party won an absolute majority at general elections held on June 1, but it nevertheless intends to form a government with the Democratic Union for Integration, a party representing Macedonia's large ethnic Albanian minority.
