British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has called on Israel to freeze settlement construction in occupied territories.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Bethlehem, Brown said settlement construction and terrorism were obstructing the Middle East peace process. Brown added that economic prosperity was the key to peace in the region. He announced some 37 million euros in new aid to the Palestinians. Palestine commemorates 60th anniversary of 'Naqba' ... housing, industrial parks and small businesses. Brown's two day-visit to Israel and the West Bank is his first since he took office a year ago. His talks with Israeli officials will include the Iranian nuclear programme and Israel's ongoing peace efforts with the Palestinians and Syria. Brown will wrap up his visit to Israel on Monday afternoon, after addressing the Knesset, the first British premier to do so.
