US Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama has called for an immediate increase of US troops in Afghanistan, saying conditions there were precarious and urgent.
Obama made the statement after talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai in Kabul. The meeting covered a range of issues including terrorism, corruption and Afghanistan's narcotics trade. An Afghan official said Obama had pledged steadfast aid to Afghanistan and vowed to pursue the war on terror "with vigour" if he wins the race for the White House. Obama has previously said he would deploy an extra 10,000 US troops to Afghanistan while downscaling US forces in Iraq. Obama's week-long international tour is expected to take him to Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Germany, Britain and France.
