German army recruits have been sworn in outside the Reichstag in Berlin for the first time in the country's federal history. Chancellor Angela Merkel and German Defence Minister Franz-Josef Jung were among those attending the ceremony which marked the anniversery of a 1944 bomb plot on Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.
Jung honoured the German resistance movement, calling it a constant reminder for German soldiers to act in unison with the country's constitution. Colonel Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg spearheaded the plot to assassinate the Hitler and form a new government to negotiate with the allies. Stauffenberg managed to plant a bomb on July 20, 1944, which detonated while Hitler was presiding over a military briefing in eastern Prussia.
