21.07.2008 - Czech embassies to undergo large changes in years ahead

Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg (for the Greens) said some embassies will be closed while others will be opened. One of the new embassies could be established in Azerbaijan, he said. of diplomacy," Schwarzenberg said. Schwarzenberg and Topolanek reportedly discussed the long-term project of ambassadors replacement, which the Foreign Ministry has allegedly prepared for the first time since 1989, with President Vaclav Klaus at their meeting at the presidential chateau in Lany, central Bohemia, last week. Topolanek, currently visiting and assessing all government members, said he is satisfied with Schwarzenberg's work. He said he has bene the best foreign minister since 1989. Topolanek praised Schwazrenberg's change in the office management.

Schwarzenberg said the reform will continue in the next two years. The reform is aimed to reduce the ministry's agenda and to decrease the number of budgetary organisations, buildings and land owned by the ministry, Topolanek said. He also praised the long-term consistent policy of the Foreign Ministry based on an active role in the EU and in NATO, ties to the United States, good neighbourly relations and an active role in solving the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Topolanek also pointed out the important role the Czech Republic plays in pushing through human rights, particularly in Cuba and Burma. A great success of the ministry is the signature of the major treaty on the possible stationing of a U.S. radar base on Czech soil and the expected inclusion of the Czech Republic in the U.S. visa-waiver programme. Topolanek also praised the ministry for its procedure in the recognition of Kosovo in May. He conceded it was problematic, but said the government chose the best solution possible. The government, however, did not make a unanimous decision. The Christian Democrats did not support it.
