Quality and affordable hospice and palliative care is a solution, Stehlikova said. The Senate, the upper house of the Czech parliament, is expected to start debating the bill in the autumn. Given the reactions it is not clear whether the bill will gain necessary support in the Senate. For instance, Senator Boris Stastny (senior ruling Civic Democrats, ODS) who is also considering legalising euthanasia has reacted negatively to the bill saying that it was submitted prematurely. He said he planned to come up with a similar proposal in a year. Euthanasia contradicts the very meaning of doctor's profession, Stehlikova said, adding that the current medicine had possibilities to provide care capable of effectively alleviating the pain of seriously ill and dying patients. She said the legalisation of euthanasia could lead to its abuse. Nevertheless, two-thirds of Czechs believe that euthanasia should be included in the Czech legal order, according to the results of a May poll by the Centre for Public Opinion Research (CVVM). In the poll, 19 percent of respondents expressed their definite consent with the legalisation of euthanasia and 10 percent were definitely against it. Euthanasia is legal in the Netherlands and Belgium, tolerated in the U.S. state of Oregon, and in Colombia and Switzerland.
