German Chancellor Angela Merkel has pledged to support Ukraine in gaining NATO membership in the long run.
Merkel told reporters after meeting with Ukraine's President Viktor Yushchenko in Kiev, that Germany and other NATO states would work with Ukraine on a "navigation plan" to guide it toward membership in the Western alliance. Merkel added that Ukraine should become an "associate member" of the European Union, but emphasised that full EU membership was not on the agenda.
