Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai have signed a framework deal committing their political parties to talks aimed at ending the country's political crisis. The signing in Harare by all parties was witnessed by South African President Thabo Mbeki.
Mugabe said the power-sharing talks would chart a new way forward to solve Zimbabwe's problems. Tsvangirai described the deal as a first tentative step. The agreement commits ruling and opposition parties to "prevention of violence", a key opposition demand, and to the forming of a new constitution. The talks begin on Thursday in Pretoria and are expected to take two weeks.
