Yemeni national Salim Hamdan has been charged with conspiracy and providing material support for terrorism. If convicted he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. Hamdan is alleged to have served as bin Laden's driver and bodyguard before his capture in 2001, in Afghanistan. He was transfered to the US detention centre at the naval station in Cuba the following year. The trial of the alleged mastermind of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, and four other defendants in death penalty cases is expected to get under way as early as September.
