French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been holding talks with political leaders in Dublin to seek a solution after Ireland's rejection of a key European Union treaty.
Sarkozy, who currently holds the EU's rotating six-month presidency, met with Prime Minister Brian Cowen as well as pro- and anti-Lisbon Treaty lobbyists. The French president said the EU will not impose a ruling on Ireland, denying that he had called for a new referendum. Sarkozy insisted he wanted to "listen and understand" why a majority of the country's citizens voted against the treaty in a June 12 referendum. Ireland was the only state to hold a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty document, which must be ratified by all countries in the bloc to take effect.
