Ministers from the European Union, the United States and other key nations are resuming crucial trade talks in Geneva, Switzerland, after a first day of discussions ended inconclusively.
The gathering aims to revitalise the stalled Doha round by securing a deal between wealthy industrialised nations and developing countries over trade barriers. The Doha round was launched in 2001 with the aim of bolstering the global economy and lowering trade barriers worldwide to allow poorer countries to export more. Many poor nations are calling on their industrialised counterparts to cut their subsidies and tariffs for agricultural products, while Brussels and Washington want big emerging nations to first open their economies.
