Father of German-Iraqi Hostage Appeals to Kidnappers ... Al-Maliki's two-day visit follows close on the heels of a visit this month by Economy Minister Michael Glos to Baghdad. That visit was meant to signify Germany's strong interest in reviving economic and business ties. Iraq was historically a strong partner for Germany, and in the 1980s bilateral trade reached about four billion euros a year. German companies are eager to resume cooperation with the country that has enormous oil reserves and where reconstruction programmes offer major contracts.
