22.07.2008 - EU welcomes Karadzic arrest

The European Union has welcomed the arrest of war crimes suspect Radovan Karadzic, who was on the run for 12 years.

The Czech Republic news are represented by www.prague-hotel-hotels.com

The former Bosnian Serb leader was allegedly working as a doctor in a Belgrade suburb under a false identity. Karadzic has three days to appeal his arrest before being transferred to the war crimes tribunal in The Hague, where he faces charges of war crimes committed during the 1992 to 1995 war in Bosnia including the charge of genocide for his role in the the 1995 massacre of up to 8,000 Muslim men and boys at  Srebrenica. German Chancellor Angela Merkel described the arrest as a historic moment, saying victims need to know that massive human rights violations do not go unpunished and adding that it spoke in favor of Serbia's chances to achieve EU membership. EU leaders want to keep up pressure for the arrest of former top Bosnian Serb military commander Ratko Mladic, who is still at large. Both men have been indicted for crimes against humanity.
