Spain's Carlos Sastre took the yellow jersey after winning an intriguing stage 17 of the Tour de France.
Sastre made his surprise move on the famous L'Alpe-d'Huez and powered on to grab the overall lead from his CSC team-mate Frank Schleck of Luxembourg.
He leads Schleck by one minute 24 seconds, with Bernhard Kohl and Cadel Evans of Australia also in contention.
Evans remains the favourite to win the Tour because he is the best time trial rider of the leading challengers.
