Iraqi President Jalal Talabani has rejected a provincial election law a day after it was adopted in parliament.
A statement from Talabani's office said the president could not accept a law on which less than half of parliamentary deputies had voted. Kurdish legislators boycotted Tuesday's vote over provisions on how to handle voting in the disputed, multi-ethnic oil city of Kirkuk. The president's refusal to ratify the law could lead to a delay of provincial elections scheduled for October 1.
